Wow, it seems like ages ago when I painted this ......and it actually was ages ago. This flower box was part of the

"Flower Power" art project in Cincinnati 2002. I ran across the article today when I was researching for my

newest Cincinnati print. I did this when I was first starting to paint....so I guess I've been at it for about twelve

years now. Hmmmm....why aren't I rich and famous yet?????

Title: Flower Children.

Pot's location: Fifth Street, in front of the Westin Hotel, downtown.

Artist: Dawna Boehmer of West Chester, who paints in oils and acrylics. "I also design clothing," she says. "Then I hand-weave, dye, ... quilt or bead the fabric."

Explanation: "Flower Children was inspired by my 2 1/2-year-old granddaughter, Lexi," Ms. Boehmer says. "Although I am a stepmother, I didn't truly appreciate what miracles children are until I held my newborn granddaughter. I feel privileged to be a part of Lexi's life and to be allowed to watch her bloom and grow." One side of the flower box features Lexi and her friend, Antwon, the other three sides are the sponsor's grandchildren, Noelle, Sophia and Drew.

Who planted it: Julie Weinel, horticulture manager for the Cincinnati Horticultural Society. "The children painted on the box are depicted in garden settings. This inspired me to use perennials that can be replanted in the ground in fall and enjoyed for many years to come," she says. Two main plants: Coreopsis "Sunray," golden-yellow, wispy flowers that bloom throughout the summer, and Scabiosa "Butterfly Blue," (common name is pincushion flower), with light blue flowers that attract butterflies. "Both plants are perennials that bloom profusely all season with light deadheading. They are great for sunny locations."
