I'm currently enamored by Larry Preston's photo realistic still lifes. Having recently
viewed them at the Principle Gallery in Charleston...I can attest that they're even more
amazing in person.
The main character in Dick Francis's book To The Hilt is an artist. This particular passage
really resonated with me.....I had set myself an unattainable ideal. Such human
skill as I could summon wasn't enough for the job. I felt the suicidal despair
of all who longed to do what they couldn't, what only a few in each century
could - whether blessed or cursed in spirit. No achievement was ever finite.
No peak of Everest to plant a flag on. Success was someone else's opinion.
We must paint for personal fulfillment since few of us will ever achieve greatness and
success is always based on someone else's opinion. And now back to my studio to keep
trying to achieve the unattainable.
